Dr. Matthew D. Lucas serves as a Professor in the Department of Health, Recreation, and Kinesiology.
Dr. Lucas holds an Ed.D. in Adapted Physical Education from the University of Virginia. He has taught in a variety of settings beginning in 1995. These settings include elementary school, middle school, and university levels. He has been teaching at Longwood University since 2006.
Dr. Lucas has created and runs three free sports/recreation programs for children with disabilities in the Farmville, VA area. Dr. Lucas also serves on the editorial boards of six journals including Palaestra, an international adapted physical education journal, two international special education journals, two national health and physical education journals and one state health, physical education, and recreation journal.
Dr. Lucas has published/co-published 75 peer-reviewed manuscripts, conducted about 50 presentations at all levels, and has published an e-course/monograph with a major publisher on the inclusion of adapted physical education in Individualized Education Programs.
Dr. Lucas has also published an anthology in a children's book on the topic of the acceptance of children with disabilities.
